Course Description:
Students will continue to hone the drawing skills developed in Drawing (ART 133), which is a prerequisite. Technical proficiency with graphite and charcoal will be increased, new media will be explored. Students will expand conceptual and technical mastery of drawing. All drawing projects and sketchbook assignments will encourage the development of a personal visual style. Students will explore the work of both historical and contemporary artists. Via self- and class critiques, students will evaluate their own work and that of their peers. This course will allow students to utilize knowledge and skills to improve communication both in visual career fields and on a personal level. Participation in the student art show or equivalent is required.

Student Learning Outcomes and Objectives:
 

  • Develop further knowledge of formal elements of art, such as line, space, value, and texture, to create accurate visual representations from life. 

  • Identify the influence of a historical or contemporary artist and apply this knowledge to their own composition. 

  • Implement proficiency of traditional media while developing the ability to incorporate color media into drawings. 

  • Apply knowledge of anatomical proportions to drawings. 

  • Assess and critique drawing using visual observation techniques. 

  • Develop creative thinking and communication skills through participation in critiques. 

  • Create a professional portfolio and/or final exhibition that demonstrates the application of elements and principles of design.

  • Anatomic Exploration: Expand and implement knowledge of human anatomy by creating figurative compositions 

  • Abstraction: Experiment with various styles of abstraction and their effects on viewer interpretation 

  • Materials and Techniques: Explore the qualities and applications of drawing media 

  • Shade and Value: Render objects by applying the illusion of light and shadow 

  • Visual Communication: Demonstrate the ability to evaluate complex visual and conceptual themes 

  • History and Context: Relate drawings to historical and contemporary developments in the field 

  • Critique: Evaluate and improve drawing skills through group, one-on-one, and self-critiques
