Course Description:
This course is designed to introduce a student in non-math related majors to some of the basic uses of mathematics in society today. Topics covered include set theory, probability, statistics, geometry, logic, personal finance, and voting and apportionment. This course will also help students gain mathematical literacy which will be of vital significance when making important life decisions. In addition, this course will help with any career that involves mathematics, decision making, or problem-solving. This course satisfies a general education requirement in the Math/Science area. 

Prerequisites/Corequisites: Prerequisites:  Students can place directly into MAT 111 with either:

  1. Proctored ALEKS score of 30 + (for any student)

OR

  1. Current Cumulative HS GPA 2.8 + (for students who have graduated high school in the last 10 years)

Corequisites: The co-requisite course MAT088 is required only when the student has:

  1. Proctored ALEKS score of 20 - 29 (for any student)

OR

  1. Current Cumulative HS GPA 2.0 - 2.799 (for students who have graduated high school in the last 10 years

OR

  1. Successful completion of MAT054 with a C or better (for any student)

All students have the right to take the proctored ALEKS placement assessment.
