Course Description:
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of painting in several media. Paint application techniques will be explored. Color theory will be used to develop color mixing techniques. Students will explore the work of both historical and contemporary painters. Via self- and class critiques, students will evaluate their own work and that of their peers. This course will allow students to utilize knowledge and skills to improve communication both in visual career fields and on a personal level. Required participation in the college art show or equivalent introduces students to proper presentation and framing methods. No prior painting experience required.

Student Learning Outcomes and Objectives:
  • Employ formal elements of art, such as line, space, value, and texture to create accurate visual representations from life 

  • Identify and apply appropriate materials and processes used for specific painting techniques 

  • Understand basic color theory and value (light/dark) in order to efficiently mix paint colors 

  • Analyze paint-application techniques used by historical and contemporary painters 

  • Construct compositions of a variety of subject matter using a range of painting media and techniques 

  • Develop creative thinking and communication skills through participation in critiques 

  • Create a professional portfolio and/or final exhibition that demonstrates the application of elements and principles of design 

Course Objectives

  • Media Specializations: Employ the unique qualities of multiple paint media, brushes, and nontraditional tools 

  • Color Application: Demonstrate an understanding of color theory to successfully use desired colors 

  • Historical Context: Identify techniques used by historically influential artists and emulate them in a new painting 

  • Analysis: Analyze the visual, conceptual, and emotional effects created by painting techniques 

  • Engagement: Manipulate compositions to develop focal points, visual movement, and conceptual dynamism 

  • Critique: Evaluate and improve painting skills through group, one-on-one, and self-critiques 

  • Participation in college art show or equivalent is required
