SOC 130 - Introduction to Gerontology

Course Description:
This course will identify and trace the history and development of major social policies and programs that affect older persons, especially in the area of health care. The course will take a broad view and examine the physical aging process as it relates to psychological and sociological age changes. The course will provide a broad background for those working with older adults.

Outcomes:

  1. Evaluate the process of aging, particularly as it relates to biological, social, psychological, political, economic, and health care concerns of the elderly.
  2. Differentiate among various individuals, political interest groups, and social organizations that are involved with issues affecting the elderly, and explain how these actors affect the lives of senior citizens.
  3. Appraise various governmental policy proposals and laws affecting the elderly.
  4. Assess the needs of the elderly and increase future job marketability because of improved competencies in the field of aging.
  5. Analyze the significant demographic trends relating to aging in American society, and the probable consequences of those trends on public policy and the economy.
  6. Synthesize the problem of ageism and cite specific examples of age discrimination affecting seniors.
