DEA 268 - Pharmacology and Emergency Procedures for Dental Assisting 2 Credits Total Lecture Hours: 30 Course Description: Course Description

Student Learning Outcomes and Objectives:
- The student will demonstrate familiarity in understanding pharmacology as it relates to dental assisting procedures; including drug requirements, agencies and regulations, drug prescriptions.
- The student will differentiate between a drugs chemical, generic, and brand or trade name.
- The student will describe the dispensing of drugs which includes; schedule of drugs, DEA, parts of a prescription.
- The student will describe drug actions and side effects, indications and contraindications, common drugs used in dentistry, properties of anesthesia, drugs and agents used to treat dental -related infections.
- The student will list the drugs commonly prescribed in dentistry and medicine.
- The student will identify the need for local anesthesia and discuss the properties of local anesthesia and demonstrate the assistant’s role in preparing for local anesthesia in a dental office.
- The student will identify, assess, and respond to medical and dental emergencies that may occur.
