DEA 285 - Oral Pathology for Dental Assisting

Course Description:
Oral Pathology for the Dental Assistant includes the fundamental understanding of abnormal findings in and around the oral cavity, including inflammation, types of disease, identification of lesions, developmental disorders, neoplasia, genetics, inflammation, degenerative changes, oral manifestations of diseases and/or conditions.

Student Learning Outcomes and Objectives:
  1. The student will explain the importance of a dental assistant understanding oral pathology.
  2. The student will describe the steps necessary for diagnosis.
  3. The student will differentiate between acute and chronic inflammation and the classic signs of inflammation.
  4. The student will describe the types of oral lesions.
  5. The student will name the three types of diseases of the oral cavity.
  6. The student will describe three conditions of associated with the tongue.
  7. The student will discuss oral cancer, warning symptoms, leukemia, smokeless tobacco lesions.
  8. The student will describe the therapy for oral cancer.
  9. The student will discuss HIV/AIDS and its oral manifestations and the five lesions associated with HIV/AIDS.
  10. The student will recognize developmental disorders of the jaws and dentition.
  11. The student will discuss other types of disorders including nutritional factors, bruxism, bulimia, oral piercings and the oral effects of methamphetamine use.
