DEA 407 - Dental Materials 3 Credits Total Lecture Hours: 30 Total Lab Hours: 30 Course Description: Dental Materials will cover the various materials used in restorative dentistry and other specialty areas in dentistry. Some materials are to fabricate dental appliances and others for tooth restoration. Lecture and laboratory components will help DA students develop an understanding of the composition, properties, structure, and manipulative variables of dental materials historically used in dentistry as well as new materials and techniques that are rapidly evolving. Emphasis centers on practical, clinical applications of materials and the need for educating patients regarding these materials and the techniques for placement of the materials in the oral cavity.

Student Learning Outcomes and Objectives:
- The student will demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of dental materials.
- The student will identify different types of impression and model materials and recognize when to use each type.
- The student will learn how cements are used in dentistry.
- The student will identify the materials that are used in preparing and placing restorations, partial dentures, dentures, and implants.
- The student will demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the properties and competencies in the uses and the manipulation of the following:
- Gypsum
- Restorative materials
- Cements
- Impression materials
- Acrylics/thermoplastics
- Waxes
- Fabrication of casts, temporary crowns/bridges
- Abrasives
- Whitening materials
- Study casts/occlusal registrations
