DEA 509 - Principles of Dental Assisting

Course Description:
This course encompasses the fundamentals of dental assisting. Including the basic operative and chairside assisting procedures, basic techniques in four handed dentistry; knowledge of dental armamentarium, dental equipment, instrumentation, dental equipment, its function and maintenance; moisture control; procedural tray setups, charting, development of clinical records, and patient screening procedures. This course also emphasizes competence in coronal polish and dental sealants.

Student Learning Outcomes and Objectives:
  1. The student will demonstrate the fundamentals of basic chairside techniques in four handed dentistry.
  2. The student will be able to identify basic instruments and perform basic tray set ups for various dental procedures.
  3. The student will demonstrate identification, function of dental equipment and the maintenance of dental equipment.
  4. The student will demonstrate the development and review of medical and dental records, including recording and screenings.
