DEA 509 - Principles of Dental Assisting 4 Credits Total Lecture Hours: 36 Total Lab Hours: 72 Course Description: This course encompasses the fundamentals of dental assisting. Including the basic operative and chairside assisting procedures, basic techniques in four handed dentistry; knowledge of dental armamentarium, dental equipment, instrumentation, dental equipment, its function and maintenance; moisture control; procedural tray setups, charting, development of clinical records, and patient screening procedures. This course also emphasizes competence in coronal polish and dental sealants.

Student Learning Outcomes and Objectives:
- The student will demonstrate the fundamentals of basic chairside techniques in four handed dentistry.
- The student will be able to identify basic instruments and perform basic tray set ups for various dental procedures.
- The student will demonstrate identification, function of dental equipment and the maintenance of dental equipment.
- The student will demonstrate the development and review of medical and dental records, including recording and screenings.
