DEA 604 - Dental Specialties

Course Description:
This course will provide a foundation in dental specialties, prosthetics, (implants), endodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery and pediatric dentistry.

Student Learning Outcomes and Objectives:
  1. The student will give indications and contraindications for dental implants, steps in patient preparation, identify the types of implants and describe the surgical procedure.
  2. The student will describe maintenance of implants and reasons for implant failure.
  3. The student will describe the types of endodontic procedures, give the cause and symptoms of pulpal damage, describe the types of diagnostic testing and conclusions for diagnosis.
  4. The student will identify the instruments and accessories used in endodontics, including the medicaments and materials used and describe the types of surgical endodontics.
  5. The student will describe the role of a DA in a periodontal practice, explain the procedures necessary for a periodontal examination, identify and describe the instruments used in periodontal procedures.
  6. The student will differentiate between hand scaling and ultrasonic scaling.
  7. The student will discuss the types of surgical periodontal procedures including the use of lasers in periodontics.
  8. The student will describe the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery, describe the role of the DA in oral surgery, identify the instruments used in basic surgical procedures.
  9. The student will explain the importance of infection control during a surgical procedure.
  10. The student will discuss the importance of suture application and removal.
  11. The student will discuss the appearance and setting of a pediatric dental practice.
  12. The student will explain why children and those with special needs patients are treated in a pediatric office, discuss behavior techniques and discuss types of procedures for the pediatric patient.
  13. The student will discuss how to handle suspected abuse and neglect.
  14. The student will list the benefits of orthodontia.
  15. The student will give the types of malocclusion and describe corrective orthodontics, including listing the types of records used to assess and prepare treatment plans and name the specialized instruments and accessories used in orthodontics, including appliances.
  16. The student will describe the importance of good oral hygiene and dietary practices in the presence of orthodontics.
  17. The student will discuss the role of a DA in caring for special care patient.
  18. The student will discuss the stages of aging and related oral conditions that affect this population.
  19. The student will discuss the importance of the medical history and give the major medical disorders that can affect oral health and treatment.
