Students will explore the structure, classification, and identification of common microorganisms and parasites affecting domestic animals. Laboratory components include specimen collection, aseptic technique, microscopic evaluation, staining methods, culture and sensitivity testing, and diagnostics such as fecal flotation and skin scraping. The course emphasizes zoonotic disease awareness, proper biosafety protocols, and technician responsibilities in disease prevention and client education.

- Demonstrate proper collection, handling, and processing techniques for microbiological and parasitological specimens in accordance with biosafety and aseptic protocols.
- Perform and interpret common diagnostic tests including Gram staining, culture and sensitivity, fecal flotation, and direct smears to identify clinically relevant microorganisms and parasites.
- Identify and classify common pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and parasites affecting domestic animals, using appropriate morphological and microscopic criteria.
- Apply knowledge of zoonotic organisms and parasite life cycles to assist in client education and implement infection prevention strategies in clinical settings.
- Document and report laboratory results accurately and clearly, utilizing veterinary medical terminology and contributing to the diagnostic and treatment process under veterinarian supervision.

Unit 1: Microbiolgy
Objective 1: Describe the morphological and structural characteristics of bacteria commonly encountered in veterinary practice.
Objective 2: Demonstrate proper in-house microbiological laboratory procedures in compliance with biosafety protocols.
Objective 3: Collect, store, and process microbiological specimens appropriately to preserve diagnostic integrity.
Objective 4: Perform and interpret basic microbiological diagnostic tests.
Objective 5: Execute proper culture techniques on selective and differential media and recognize colony morphology and growth characteristics of key organisms.
Objective 6: Conduct and interpret antimicrobial sensitivity testing and understand its relevance in clinical decision-making.
Unit 2: Mycology
Objective 1: Describe the morphological and structural characteristics fungi commonly encountered in veterinary practice.
Objective 2: Execute proper culture techniques on selective and differential media, and recognize colony morphology and growth characteristics of key organisms.
Objective 3: Identify common veterinary fungal pathogens and describe their significance in animal and zoonotic disease.
Unit 3: Parasitology
Objective 1: Collect and properly handle clinical samples using appropriate restraint and aseptic technique to ensure sample integrity
Objective 2: Perform and interpret parasitology laboratory procedures to detect and quantify parasitic organisms.
Objective 3: Identify common veterinary parasites in diagnostic samples by their morphological characteristics.
Objective 4: Describe generalized life cycles, host relationships, and pathogenic effects of major parasites affecting domestic animals.
Objective 5: Understand why appropriate parasitic treatment and control methods are used, in accordance with veterinary protocols.
Objective 5: Explain zoonotic transmission risks of parasitic diseases and recommend preventive strategies to protect animal and public health.
Unit 4: Safety
Objective 1: Apply safety standards and personal protective practices when working with microbial agents, specimens, and reagents.
