Course Description:
Discusses moral, ethical and legal principles applicable to veterinarians and their employees, breeders, kennel operators, pet groomers and others allied to the small animal industry. Considers state, local and federal regulations relating to the industry. Effective client relations and telephone courtesy skills are also stressed.

Unit Objectives:
Unit 1: Explain the purpose and significance of the Veterinary Technician Oath and demonstrate an understanding of its ethical and professional commitments within veterinary practice.
Unit 2: Describe the clinical responsibilities, roles, and career opportunities of veterinary technicians within various animal care settings.
Objective 1: Demonstrate knowledge of health and safety regulations in the veterinary workplace.
Objective 2: Identify occupational hazards and the safe handling of animals and equipment in the veterinary workplace.
Unit 3: Demonstrate understanding of federal, state, and local regulations governing veterinary medicine.
Objective 1: Describe the purpose and scope of CFR Title 21, and explain how it governs the use, handling, and documentation of pharmaceuticals and controlled substances in veterinary practice.
Objective 2: Explain the purpose of the DEA Controlled Substances Act and describe the responsibilities of veterinary professionals in the handling, storage, prescribing, and recordkeeping of controlled substances.
Objective 3: Identify and explain key Iowa laws and administrative rules governing veterinary medicine, including licensure requirements, scope of practice, and professional responsibilities for veterinary technicians.
Objective 4: Identify and explain key Fort Dodge municipal ordinances related to animal protection and control and describe the role of veterinary technicians in ensuring compliance with these local regulations.
Objective 5: Describe the grounds for professional disciplinary action in veterinary medicine and explain the consequences and procedures involved in addressing violations of laws, regulations, and ethical standards.
Objective 6: Analyze ethical and legal dilemmas presented in veterinary case studies and apply professional standards, laws, and ethical principles to make informed decisions in real-world scenarios.
Unit 5: Identify and explain key regulations related to animal welfare.
Objective 1: Describe the purpose and key provisions of the Animal Welfare Act and explain how it impacts the care, use, and treatment of animals in research, exhibition, and commercial settings.
Objective 2: Explain the requirements of the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and describe how these standards guide ethical treatment and welfare of animals in research settings.
Objective 3: Summarize the key principles and methods outlined in the AVMA Euthanasia Guidelines 2020 and demonstrate understanding of their application to ensure humane and ethical euthanasia practices in veterinary settings.
