The decision to work in public safety is a commendable and selfless sacrifice. It takes a special man or woman to take on the unique challenge of a career in public service and safety.

The Iowa Central Community College Fire Science program provides the knowledge, training and skills necessary for a rewarding career in Fire Fighting Field. The training our students receive can be beneficial to help students enter the field of Fire Fighting or if they are already in the field, the training is beneficial for career advancement. Students also have the opportunity to receive National Certification in Firefighter I & II, Emergency Medical Technician and entry level Wildland Firefighter.

Associate in Applied Science in Fire Science
The Associate in Applied Science in Fire Science is a comprehensive two-year program designed to allow students to gain college credit hours for specific training that will help them enter the field of Fire Fighting. This program is rich in general education courses to facilitate pursuit of a baccalaureate degree and possesses the requisite technical and managerial courses to provide the foundation for leadership in the Fire Science Profession.

Program Outcomes:

  1. Describe theoretical concepts of how fire impacts major types of building construction.
  2. Identify the fundamental theories of fire Behavior and Combustion.
  3. Identify laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations as they relate to fire service.
  4. Describe and identify various types and uses of fire protection systems.
  5. Describe the components and development of the fire and emergency services.
  6. Explain the 16 Life Safety Initiatives.
  7. Recognize the importance of ethics and communication skills.
  8. Classify and demonstrate the process of conducting fire origin and cause.
  9. Analyze fire cause.
  10. Demonstrate knowledge of water hydraulics as it relates to fire protection.
  11. Discuss applicable court decisions that have influenced emergency services.
  12. Describe and analyze the components of risk identification, risk evaluation, and incident management.
  13. Create a strategy and implement appropriate tactics.
  14. Perform practical skills needed for entry level firefighter.

Notes:


Program Requirements: Students must earn a grade of a “C” or better in all Fire Science program of study courses and meet the necessary prerequisites to progress in the program. Students are required to complete National Background check and State Adult & Child Abuse check.

FESHE Required Courses: FIR 124 , FIR 127  , FIR 152 , FIR 213 , FIR 221 , and FIR 400  

Will accept IFSAC or ProBoard certification at HazMat - Ops Firefighter I level with appropriate documentation for FIR 170
