According to the ATA (American Trucking Association-Oct 2021 report) the trucking industry is short 80,000 drivers which is creating a supply chain slowdown. Iowa Central is striving to help with the driver shortage by providing safe and skilled drivers to the trucking industry. If you are ready for a career change, truck driving is a lucrative and in-demand profession, and we will give you the tools you need to be successful.
Iowa Central Community College is a Registered Training Provider via our non-credit Career Launch, meeting and exceeding the FMCSA ELDT requirements (Theory and BTW). We are also an authorized 3rd party testing center, and all of our testing is done on site with our certified DOT testers.
*All applicants are required by the DOT and the FMCSA to be able to speak, read, and comprehend English.

ZST-207
On the Job Training (OJT) consists of 210 hours (4 weeks) with the student’s new employer (pay provided by employer). A Training Evaluation Worksheet must be returned to Iowa Central upon completion.
Students will receive two certificates, one for the 390 hour ZST-206 course and one for the 210 hour ZST-207 course.
ZST-206
This class consists of 390 hours, a minimum of 51 sessions (approximately 11 weeks) and meets and exceeds the FMCSA ELDT Theory and BTW standards and requirements. Classes consist of classroom, range and public road driving and testing. Scheduling to test is not a problem, as we are also an authorized 3rd party testing center and testing is done on site with our certified DOT tester. Training is in done in automatic and manual trucks.
Classes are offered Monday through Thursday 7am-3:30pm. Friday 7am-2:30pm.
ZST-206 Course Description
This course is recommended for someone that is interested in a career as a Professional Semi truck driver (local or OTR). Students learn the concepts of operating a tractor and trailer with hands-on operation that applies the learned knowledge into practical application. This time will be spent on inspections (all types), basic control, serpentine driving (control of trailer), backing (all types), proper set ups, turns, shifting, coupling and uncoupling, along with driving in (all types) rural, city and interstate conditions. Students average 200 hours of driving. Teaching a student to operate an 80,000 pound truck safely will also include map reading, trip planning, logging, load securement, and proper weight distribution.
Entrance Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must be able to speak, read and comprehend English (per DOT and FMCSA regulations).
- Must possess a valid driver license.
- Must have a Class A CDL permit (CLP) from the state where you reside. Out of state can use their permit in Iowa.
- Get a DOT approved physical. (physician must be listed on the FMCSA register of certified doctors). Do not do the drug screen - we do that when you start classes.
- Fill out our application under CDL Admissions.
- Call us and pay for the online Theory to be done prior to attendance (this will be reimbursed when you start classes). Cost $75
- All students are required to take a drug screen when class starts. (included in the fees).
- Driving record and criminal backgrounds will be reviewed and approved prior to starting.
Federal DOT Physical Disqualifications:
- High blood pressure - readings of 160/90 or higher are considered borderline by the DOT.
- Respiratory dysfunction that might interfere with safe driving
- Cardiovascular disease that may interfere with safe driving
- Rheumatic, arthritic or muscular disease that interferes with the ability to operate a vehicle safely
- History of epilepsy
- Mental, nervous or psychiatric disorder that may affect safe driving
- Visual acuity of 20/40 in each eye with 70% horizontal vision.
- Extensive hearing loss
- Use of certain prescription drugs that may affect safe driving
- Current clinical diagnosis of alcoholism
- Impairment or loss of leg, foot, hand or finger that may affect safe driving
