This course provides comprehensive instruction in welding, fabrication, and industrial maintenance to prepare students for careers in the skilled trades. Students will develop foundational and advanced skills in welding processes, mechanical systems, and shop operations while emphasizing safety, communication, and problem-solving in real-world maintenance environments.

Instruction includes blueprint reading and technical drawing interpretation, enabling students to understand and apply standard machining and welding symbols used in industry. Students will build literacy in print and machine terminology to support effective communication and decision-making in technical careers. Hands-on training is a core component of the course. Students will learn the theory and operation of Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG) and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG), with emphasis on safety and welding in flat and horizontal positions. Additional instruction includes thermal cutting and welding processes, such as oxy-fuel cutting (OFC), oxy-fuel welding (OFW), brazing, and plasma cutting. Lab activities reinforce classroom concepts and develop practical welding and fabrication skills.

Students will also gain experience in shop operations, including proper use and maintenance of tools, equipment, and fasteners, while building a strong foundation in safe work practices. The course introduces mechanical processes and industrial systems, focusing on the role of the maintenance technician, troubleshooting techniques, and the development of a proactive, solution-oriented mindset.

Safety training is a major component of the program. Students will complete OSHA 10-Hour General Industry training, gaining knowledge of workplace safety standards and regulations. Additional certifications include CPR/AED/First Aid, preparing students to respond effectively to emergencies, and forklift training, providing both classroom and hands-on experience that meets OSHA and industry standards.

Throughout the course, students will strengthen critical thinking, technical communication, and employability skills, preparing them for entry-level positions or further education in welding, manufacturing, and maintenance careers.
