Course Description:
This course will further develop graphic design concepts and techniques explored in Graphic Design (ART 115), which is a prerequisite. This course will explore advanced technical applications used in the visual communication arts industry. The focus will be on finding creative visual solutions to communication problems using advanced technical and critical thinking skills. Via self- and class critiques, students will evaluate their own work and that of their peers. This course will allow students to utilize knowledge and skills to improve communication both in visual career fields and on a personal level. Required participation in the college art show introduces students to proper presentation and framing methods.

Student Learning Outcomes and Objectives:
 

  • Develop further knowledge of formal elements and principles of design and apply the knowledge in the creation process

  • Demonstrate proficiency in graphic design technology and software by successfully generating projects

  • Construct compositions that reflect the design process: orientation, analysis, conception, generation, and implementation

  • Demonstrate an appreciation of the cultural, social, political, environmental, and historical aspects of design

  • Identify the influence of a designer and apply this knowledge to their own composition

  • Develop creative thinking and communication skills through participation in critiques

  • Create a professional portfolio and/or final exhibition that demonstrates the application of elements and principles of design

Course Objectives

  • Graphic Design History: Apply knowledge of pivotal historic and contemporary designers and graphic design 

  • Design Concepts: Develop an understanding of the language of design, which includes critical theory, critique, history, technology, and craftsmanship 

  • Illustration: Employ the methods and techniques used in digital illustration 

  • Typography and Layout Design: Create dynamic layouts using the theories of design, visual organization, and typography  

  • Composition and Visual Communication: Apply core concepts of composition to produce work that enhances visual communication 

  • Branding Design: Generate brand identity focusing on visual communication and evaluate effectiveness of solutions
