MAP 221 - Medical Laboratory Procedures 1 1.5 credits This course presents basic medical laboratory procedures performed in ambulatory healthcare settings. The course begins with an introduction to the basic principles of medical asepsis and disinfection. Students will learn proper handwashing techniques, and how to properly disinfect. The course will introduce students to the lab, its departments, and regulatory agencies. The course concludes with a study of the basics of medical microbiology, including common bacterial diseases, specimens for testing, methods of bacterial disease prevention, and CLIA waived microbiology testing. The course encourages students to demonstrate critical thinking, and to incorporate knowledge gained into the performance of course competencies. This course is the first course of a two-semester sequence.
