BPT 162 - Introduction to Biotechnology 2 credits This course focuses on the basic principles of biology and chemistry that are the foundation of modern biotechnology. Topics include understanding the structure, function and measurement of the four basic macromolecules of life(i.e. proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and carbohydrates). Students then explore how these macromolecules combine into patterns that produce living cells and how these cells grow, metabolize and reproduce. Other topics include unit conversions using the factor label method, calculations for the preparation of chemical solutions and the use of standard lab equipment. Finally, the student will learn about modification of DNA and transformation of organisms along with some basic statistical methods to monitor lab quality. Two hours lecture.
