DHY 209 - Periodontology 3 credits This course covers the initiation, development, pathogenesis, mechanism, etiology and process of periodontal disease is fundamental to the clinical hygienist. Periodontology provides an in-depth study of the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. It presents the microscopic oral anatomy of the periodontium, plaque-induced and non-plaque induced diseases and the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) classification of periodontal diseases, clinical characteristics, histopathology, and etiology of periodontal diseases. Special emphasis centers on the role of the immune system and host response to bacteria in the initiation and progression of periodontal disease, including the risk factors associated with periodontal disease.
